At the time I wrote this, we’re in a COVID19 pandemic situation. Our normal days change, we even call it new normal. Working remotely or working from home (WFH) become a new normal for some people. People used to just tap other coworker shoulder to ask about something, now we can’t meet face to face and have to get to them by chat or other. We used to do meeting together with others, sitting side by side, now we can’t. We have to do meeting through video call platform.

One of difficulties that we may face during WFH is noises that we have at home. We can lose our focus during meeting when we got distracted by certain noise. To help us eliminating those noises, we can use an active noise cancelling (ANC) headphone or earphone.

Active noise cancelling headphones can help us to “active”-ly block noises from entering our ear. How does it happen? ANC headphones make use of a concept called destructive interference in audio wave. So, it has a microphone that will capture noises from our surrounding and then produce new wave that is out of shape. So that when the new wave interfere with wave from noise, they will cancel each other out and we will only hear things produced by the headphone. That means we won’t hear noise from our surrounding.

Active noise cancelling is awesome that it implement a physics theory to solve one of our problem. And now we can immerse ourself in paying attention to a meeting or just listening to our favourite songs. Let’s start saving money to get one :P
